Samsung Is Done With Digital Cameras

Samsung has officially given up on its digital camera production business. The latest reports from The Investor and SamMobile state that Samsung will be moving on from digital cameras and applying their focus towards “a new camera product category”. I assume that this new category could be applied towards GoPro-style action cams and 360 cameras. But that’s just a solid guess since the Gear 360 was released during the recent Samsung Unpacked event.

“We no longer produce and sell digital cameras. But we will create a new camera product category to continue the business.”Samsung official

Whether Samsung approves or denies these claims, there is evidence of their current digital camera lineups being discontinued and removed from certain markets. This isn’t surprising since Samsung’s current smartphone cameras are among the best in class, but the digital camera market is dominant with companies like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Lecia, and Panasonic. The advantage these other brands have over Samsung is nearly 100 years of history and development. Not that Samsung wouldn’t be appreciated but I think if they were to remain in this market they should pair with other brands on the cosmetic side of things. Camera exteriors, screens, and software still aren’t as good as they could be (which opens the door for outside advancements). Until Samsung does make a new digital camera we can only expect that these reports are true for the moment.
