Google is giving Android its own stage before Google I/O fully kicks off.

The company will stream The Android Show: I/O Edition on May 12 at 1PM ET / 10AM PT, a week ahead of the main I/O conference. Google is keeping the details light, but it is already calling 2026 one of Android?s biggest years, which is exactly the kind of line meant to get people watching.

The obvious expectation is Android 17. Google could use the stream to talk about the next platform update, AI features on Android and changes that might be too Android-specific for the broader I/O keynote. Gemini will almost certainly be part of the conversation, though Google may save the biggest AI announcements for the main conference.

The more interesting question is hardware. Android XR got its big reveal at last year?s I/O, and Google has already lined up eyewear partners like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. If smart glasses are going to become more than a demo-loop idea in 2026, this would be a good place to show how Android fits into that future.

For regular Android users, the best case is that Google keeps this stream focused on phones, tablets, wearables and useful software changes instead of turning every feature into an AI pitch. Either way, the Android Show should give us an early read on what Google thinks matters most before I/O week takes over.
