OpenAI is removing rate limits on ChatGPT free unlimited text chats for Free and Go accounts, according to the company’s August 6 product update. Starting next week, those users can keep pure text conversations going without a message cap. Limits still apply when you add files, images, image generation, or other tools.
The same rollout makes GPT-5.6 Luna the new default for Free and Go this week. It replaces GPT-5.5 Instant, which had been the free default since May. OpenAI frames the change as broader access to its latest model family, not just a looser timer.
What free and Go users get
Free and Go users will also see a new Think button. That control gives GPT-5.6 Luna more time on harder questions. OpenAI says pure text Think use skips the rate limit. Pair it with other tools, though, and those features still burn separate caps.
In short, the company is opening the floodgates for text while keeping costlier multimodal usage gated. Image uploads, file attachments, image generation, and voice mode still sit behind their own limits. Abuse guardrails remain on the unlimited text path as well.
Plus and Pro get a Sol tune-up
Paid tiers are not left out. OpenAI is updating GPT-5.6 Sol for everyday ChatGPT chats. Answers stay more focused, match detail to the question, and skip extra formatting when a short reply is enough. Plus and Pro users also get a new effort slider, akin to Claude’s effort menu, that sets how much thought goes into each answer.
For Plus and Pro, the same updated Sol model now powers Instant replies and deeper reasoning. Switching effort should feel like one consistent system, not a different personality. The company says this Chat-tuned Sol lives only in the ChatGPT chat experience. The Sol builds that power Work and Codex stay unchanged in this release.
OpenAI also claims stronger factual reliability. In an internal check of financial, medical, and legal prompts, responses with at least one factual error fell about 62 percent with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68 percent with GPT-5.6 Sol versus GPT-5.5 Instant. Those are company numbers, so treat them as OpenAI’s own evaluation rather than a third-party audit.
Why the timing matters
Message caps have long been the free-tier friction point. Once users hit a window limit, ChatGPT would slow them down or push them to a smaller model until the timer reset. Removing that wall for text-only chats is a meaningful shift in how Free and Go feel day to day.
The update also sits next to other ChatGPT product work this year. OpenAI recently expanded ChatGPT Health for U.S. adults and rolled out fuller full-duplex voice mode with GPT-Live. Unlimited text does not replace those tools. Still, it makes the free baseline less interrupt-driven for writing, planning, and follow-up questions.
OpenAI still ties free expansion to safety work. The August system card describes extra training for users the company believes are under 18. That includes limits on romantic roleplay and age-restricted content. It also prompts teens toward real-world support when they may need it.
