The Association for Computing Machinery ACM is widely recognized as the premier organization for computing professionals, and it’s A.M. Turing Award is often called the “Nobel Prize of computing. Dating far back as 1966, accomplished computer scientists or engineers like Douglas Engelbart, the inventor of the computer mouse have continuously being awarded the prestigious A.M Turing. Not heard of it before? That’s because the Turing Award prize in the past was a modest $250,000, and the organization didn’t have huge sponsors or indulged in lots of promotion to bring in mainstream. Things just went the opposite direction fast, as ACM just announced that “the funding level for the ACM A.M. Turing Award is now $1,000,000, to be provided by Google Inc.” Google has co-sponsored of the award since 2007 with the likes of Intel. The Google cash award, goes into effect for the 2014 ACM Turing Award to be announced early next year.

The ACM President Alexander Wolf, a professor in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London confirmed this at recent press event  “With the generous support of Google, we can celebrate the mainstream role of computing in transforming the world and the way we communicate, conduct business, and access entertainment. We can also commemorate the pioneering, fundamental contributions of our ACM Turing Award recipients in advancing computing as a science and a profession.” Hopefully Google’s $1 million enable more professional development, and promote policies and research that benefit society.
