The redesigned Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport for 2027 is the five-seat sibling to the three-row Atlas. Volkswagen calls it the most powerful Atlas Cross Sport ever. An updated turbo four makes 282 horsepower. The brand also promises better fuel efficiency than the outgoing model. Sales timing points to early 2027 after the three-row Atlas returns first.
Volkswagen built the Cross Sport on the same MQB Evo family architecture as the new Atlas. Therefore the two share basic proportions under the skin. However the Cross Sport keeps a shorter, sleeker two-row body. Meanwhile the brand is leaning harder into premium cabin materials, larger screens, and available massaging front seats.
Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport powertrain: 282 hp
Under the hood sits an updated turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Volkswagen rates it at 282 horsepower. In addition, efficiency should improve versus the prior Cross Sport engine. An eight-speed automatic remains standard. Buyers can choose front-wheel drive or 4MOTION all-wheel drive. That horsepower figure matches the 2027 Atlas. Moreover VW’s media site already published EPA estimates for the Atlas with the same 282-hp, 258 lb-ft EVO5 EA888 package.
Torque lands a bit below the previous Cross Sport peak. Still, Volkswagen expects broader, quicker response from a variable-geometry turbo and Miller-cycle tuning on the new EVO5 hardware. Official Cross Sport EPA numbers have not been posted yet. That said, the three-row Atlas gains about 2 mpg combined over its predecessor. Industry coverage expects a similar step for the five-seater.
Exterior and cabin redesign
Outside, stacked LED lighting and cleaner flanks give the Cross Sport a sharper profile. Furthermore a flush-mounted tailgate finishes the rear. Most trims can light the VW badge. New colors expand the palette. Because the greenhouse is shorter and more raked than the three-row Atlas, the two-row model looks more coupe-like without leaving the family face.

Inside, Volkswagen wraps the dash with a continuous loop, real wood accents, contrast stitching, and ambient lighting. A 10.3-inch Digital Cockpit is standard. Roughly 90 percent of the lineup moves to a 15-inch center touchscreen. The base grade keeps a smaller 12.9-inch unit. A physical Driver Experience Dial handles volume. It also jumps into drive modes or ambient Atmospheres. Consequently column-mounted shifting frees the console for dual wireless phone chargers with magnetic grips.
Every trim gets a reworked 12-way driver’s seat. Upper trims can add full-back massage for both front seats. Available Nappa leather arrives on higher grades. Likewise the top grade can add a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. Pull-up rear sunshades and a nine-speaker audio system arrive as broader standard equipment.
Trims, plant, and timing
Press coverage lists SE, SE Tech, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line trims for the U.S. lineup. Volkswagen builds Atlas family SUVs in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The three-row Atlas is due on sale this fall. Then the Cross Sport follows in early 2027. Pricing has not been announced. That lag matters because the Atlas family already accounts for a large share of Volkswagen’s U.S. volume.
If you are watching midsize crossovers more broadly, the Cross Sport lands in a crowded segment. For a different electrified truck angle from Detroit, see our earlier note on the Ford Fathom midsize EV pickup for 2027. Similarly, premium electric SUVs are climbing the price ladder, including models such as the Volvo EX60 from $58,400 before destination.
What to watch next
Volkswagen still needs to lock Cross Sport MSRPs, EPA labels, and option packaging. Moreover the hybrid teed up for a midcycle Atlas family refresh remains a later chapter. For now, the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport pitch is clear. More horsepower. A richer cabin. A cleaner two-row shape. Built in Tennessee for early next year.
