Wear OS 7 is Google’s next smartwatch update, and it is built around two clear ideas: more glanceable information and more Gemini-powered actions from your wrist.

Google says Wear OS 7 adds a new Wear Widgets system. It is meant to give developers more dynamic, customizable ways to show useful information on smartwatches.

The update also brings Live Updates to watches. That should make real-time information easier to follow without digging through apps.

Gemini comes closer to the wrist

Wear OS 7 includes developer APIs that connect apps to Gemini Intelligence. That matters because Google wants Gemini to handle more actions, not just answer questions.

In practice, that could mean task automation from a watch. Google gives examples like ordering through a delivery app from your wrist. The useful version of this is simple: quick actions that do not require pulling out a phone.

Google is also adding media improvements, including better controls for apps that launch the Wear OS media interface and a Remote Output Switcher for choosing headphones or speakers.

There is also a developer story here. Wear OS only gets better when apps use the platform well. Widgets, media routing and real-time updates give developers more reasons to treat the watch as its own surface instead of a tiny notification mirror.

The Tech My Money take

Wear OS 7 sounds like a meaningful update if developers actually use the new tools. Smartwatches are best when they reduce phone checks, not when they behave like tiny phones.

The Gemini angle is the most interesting piece. If assistant actions become reliable on a watch, Wear OS could feel much more useful during workouts, commutes and quick errands.

Google says a Wear OS 7 test version is available through the Canary Emulator before release later this year. Tech My Money will keep tracking the update in our Mobile coverage.
