Google is testing a new feature for the Nest thermostat that will help owners identify potential issues with their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. If “unusual or unexpected patterns” are detected, Nest will send them an alert via email. For those who already signed up to get the Nest Home Report, you’ll have to do absolutely nothing else, as Nest noted that “you’ll be automatically enrolled to get these new HVAC alert emails.”
For instance, if it’s taking longer than normal to heat or cool your home, the alert email tells the owner what the thermostat noticed and which system (heating or cooling) may have been affected. Google also noted that owners will “also get a link to an optional survey to tell us more about what you experienced with your HVAC system, and what you did to resolve it.”
Google also made it clear in a recent blog post that the new feature is not a one size fits all detection service. They noted that there will be issues the thermostat won’t catch—but over time and through your feedback, Nest thermostats will get smarter and better at detecting more and more possible problems.
How to sign up for the Nest Home Report and HVAC alerts
- Open the Nest app.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Notifications Nest Home Report.
- Slide the slider on.
If you want the Home Report but not HVAC alerts, you can opt-out of HVAC alerts by clicking the link at the end of the alert email.
