Amazon Alexa Now Controls Your Nest Thermostat

You can just talk to Alexa and have her warm up your house for you.

Starting from today, Amazon devices that support Amazon’s cloud-based digital assistant Alexa will now be able to control Nest thermostats. Just as seen on the “Works With Nest” page for Amazon, the company confirmed it with a recent post “Alexa and Nest now work together to help you set the perfect temperature. Simply issue a voice command like “Alexa, set my Living Room temperature to 68 degrees” and you’ll become more comfortable – without having to lift a finger.”

We all knew this day would come after Amazon mentioned both device compatibility at the launch of the new Amazon Dot and Tap earlier his month. With Alexa, there’s no need to go to your thermostat or find your phone, all you have to do is just talk to Alexa on your Amazon Echo, Fire TV, Tap or Echo Dot to carry out your bidding. How set up Amazon Alexa to work with your Nest Thermostat You can set up Alexa with the Alexa app in a few simple steps. Then simply ask Alexa to discover your Nest Thermostat by saying, “Alexa, discover my devices.” Amazon has more detailed instructionshere if you need them. Once you’ve got Alexa and your Nest Thermostat talking to each other, you can say basic commands like, “Alexa, set the temperature to 65 degrees.” Or you can say, “Alexa, lower the temperature by 2 degrees.” Things you can say to control your Nest Thermostat Here are some examples of what you can say to Alexa to control your Nest Thermostat. Wherever you see “thermostat name” in the examples below, you should say the location of where it’s installed. You can see this on the Nest app home screen under your thermostat’s icon. In rare cases, you may have two thermostats with the same location name and a custom label. Labels appear under your thermostat’s name in parentheses in the Nest app, like Hallway (upstairs) and Hallway (downstairs). So you’d say, “Alexa, set the Hallway downstairs to 67 degrees.” Set a specific target temperature

Alexa, set the temperature to 68 degrees.
Alexa, change the “thermostat name” to 68 degrees.
Alexa, turn my “thermostat name” temperature to 68 degrees.

Raise or lower the target temperature

Alexa, lower the temperature by 4 degrees.
Alexa, cool down my “thermostat name” by 4 degrees.
Alexa, raise the “thermostat name” by 4 degrees.
Alexa, make my “thermostat name” warmer by 4 degrees.
Alexa, increase the “thermostat name” temperature by 4 degrees.

If you ask Alexa to change the temperature without specifying by how much (“Alexa, lower the temperature.”) it will change the temperature by two degrees. Also, if you have more than one thermostat and don’t say the name, Alexa may ask you to say the name of the one you want to control. Note: Alexa won’t be able to control your Nest Thermostat if it’s in Away, Auto-Away, or Off modes, if it’s using Emergency Heat or there’s an Emergency Shutoff.Nest Support
