BMW Spider-Man promotion content is landing on Control Displays in eligible cars. BMW Group’s own press release frames it as a limited “festive animation” for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, not a traditional commercial. Owners online still call it a dashboard ad.

Meanwhile, the company says the window runs from July 27 through August 10 in more than 70 countries. Supported cars need the right options, a build date after July 2020, and BMW Operating System 7, 8, 8.5, 9, or X. Therefore, a large slice of post-2020 BMWs can see the banner after a cold start.

What actually appears on the screen

In addition, BMW describes a special banner on the Control Display when the car starts. Drivers tap that banner to launch a full-screen animation with soundtrack and ambient-light choreography. BMW stresses that the full sequence plays only after the driver initiates it. Still, the prompt itself appears without asking first.

The stunt is part of a wider Sony Pictures and Marvel partnership. The BMW iX3 and BMW 5 Series appear in the film, and BMW debuted a one-off iX3 Flow – Spider-Man Brand New Day exterior with E Ink Prism graphics for the premiere. So the in-car content sells both the movie and BMW’s Neue Klasse moment.

Why owners are angry

However, luxury buyers did not expect a Marvel promo on a private center screen. Social posts and forums framed the banner as forced advertising in a car people already paid for. That sting is sharper because BMW once sounded allergic to selling the screen for commercials.

In 2023, Connected Company Development SVP Stephan Durach told an audience he did not see BMW selling the display for commercials, calling the cabin a private space, according to a BMW Blog transcript that Engadget and other outlets have recirculated. The new campaign does not stream random third-party ads. Overall, it still turns the Control Display into a brand partnership surface.

What BMW says next

BMW has answered the backlash by calling the animation part of a broader brand partnership and optional once the banner appears. The company has not said the promo will run past August 10. Drivers who want zero Spider-Man theming should ignore the banner until the window ends.

Tech My Money has already covered how BMW’s iX5 stretches electric range in the X5 family and how Spider-Man: Brand New Day offered early Amazon Prime screenings. The dashboard promo is a different story: not hardware, but who controls the cabin software after the sale.
