Twitch Dual Format is the kind of streaming update that sounds obvious only after a platform finally does it.
At TwitchCon Rotterdam 2026, Twitch announced that creators will soon be able to send horizontal and vertical versions of a stream at the same time. Desktop viewers still get the classic wide layout. Mobile viewers can get a full-screen vertical view when they hold a phone upright.
The point is simple. Twitch wants one livestream to work better on both a monitor and a phone. That matters because live video is no longer watched from one kind of screen. A creator may be playing on a 16:9 setup, while a viewer is watching from a phone during a commute.
The Catch Is Encoding
Twitch says Dual Format uses Enhanced Broadcasting technology. That means the creator’s setup can encode multiple stream variants for viewers. The company also says server-side transcoding support is coming for Partners and many Affiliates. That should reduce the strain on some systems.
That caveat matters. Dual Format is not just a new button for every underpowered streaming PC. Twitch’s Dual Format Help article still frames the feature as beta access. It also lists requirements around broadcast software, GPU class, Windows, upstream bandwidth, and a separate vertical canvas.
2K Streaming Is Coming Too
Twitch also plans to bring 2K, or 1440p, streaming to all Partners and Affiliates in June. The company says bitrate support is moving up to 9 Mbps for 1440p and 7.5 Mbps for 1080p. That should help fast-moving gaming streams look cleaner.
There are other creator tools in the pile. Mid-stream summaries will help late viewers catch up. Auto Clips will try to identify shareable moments from a stream. Twitch is also adding automatic captions for community clips, best-clip lists in stream summaries, and GIPHY support in chat for higher-tier subscribers.
The big shift is still Dual Format. Twitch is not asking creators to pick desktop or mobile first. It is trying to make one live show feel native on both.
