The Surface Pro 12-inch is Microsoft’s smallest 2-in-1, and it is getting a Snapdragon X2 Plus refresh. Microsoft introduced the new Pro and the Surface Laptop 13-inch at Snapdragon Summit on September 23.
Both machines keep last year’s thin designs. Still, Microsoft says the new chip is faster, quieter under load, and stronger at on-device AI. The company also added 500-nit screens and a new Black finish. Pre-orders are live, and availability starts October 13 in select markets.
Snapdragon X2 Plus is the real change
Microsoft is not redesigning these PCs. Instead, it is swapping last year’s Snapdragon X Plus for Snapdragon X2 Plus. Surface engineers say they worked with Qualcomm while the silicon was still in development, so the chip would fit thin, fanless, or quiet Windows PCs.
Compared with the previous Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, Microsoft claims:
- up to 17% faster Office productivity
- up to 18% more efficient battery use
- more than 60% faster graphics
- up to 95% faster local AI on the NPU
Those numbers come from Microsoft’s own UL Procyon, 3DMark, and AI tests in September 2026. Therefore, treat them as company benchmarks, not independent reviews. Performance will still vary by configuration and workload.
This is also the smaller-PC follow-up to Microsoft’s June Snapdragon X2 Surface refresh. That wave covered the 13-inch Pro and the 13.8-inch and 15-inch Laptops, and it started at $1,499.
Surface Pro 12-inch and Laptop 13-inch
The Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd edition) remains a fanless 12-inch tablet with a kickstand. It weighs 1.5 pounds without the keyboard. The 3:2 PixelSense LCD is 2196 x 1464 at up to 90Hz, and it now peaks at 500 nits. Microsoft says that is 25% brighter than before. It also says web browsing lasts about one extra hour, up to 13 hours. Microsoft rates local video playback at up to 15.5 hours.
Inside is a 6-core Snapdragon X2 Plus with an 80 TOPS Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. Consumer configs start at 16GB RAM and 256GB UFS storage. You can also choose 24GB RAM and 512GB storage. Ports stay limited: two USB-C 3.2 connections, DisplayPort 1.4a for up to two 4K 60Hz monitors, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4. The Surface Pro keyboard and Slim Pen still sell separately. Magnetic pen storage and wireless charging sit on the back of the tablet.
The new Pro also ships with Microsoft Ink Canvas. Microsoft describes it as a pen-first canvas for sketching, annotating, generating images, and summarizing text. AI features need a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, or Pro subscription, and usage limits apply. The app will also hit the Microsoft Store on October 13 for other supported Surface and Windows devices.
The Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd edition) is the clamshell version of the same idea. It uses the same 6-core Snapdragon X2 Plus chip. The 13-inch 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen is 1920 x 1280 at 60Hz and also reaches 500 nits. Microsoft rates local video at up to 22.5 hours and web use at up to 18 hours. The aluminum laptop weighs 2.7 pounds. It has a full-size backlit keyboard, a precision touchpad, two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, a headphone jack, and a fingerprint power button.
Colors for both PCs include Platinum, Violet, and the new Black option. Microsoft says colors depend on the model and market.
Surface Mouse, business 5G, and the new prices
Microsoft is also launching a new Surface Mouse. It is ambidextrous, uses Bluetooth 6.0, and adds haptic feedback for actions such as snapping a window or aligning an object. A customizable top button can launch Copilot or other shortcuts through the Surface app. It starts at $79.99 in Black and Platinum on October 13.
Surface for Business versions of the Pro, Laptop, and mouse also arrive October 13. Specifically, the 12-inch Pro for Business can add optional 5G. Microsoft calls that one of the most requested extras for this size. Wi-Fi-only Pro models stay at 1.5 pounds. The 5G model is 1.6 pounds, and cellular use shortens the battery claim.
Pricing is the hard part. The Surface Pro 12-inch starts at $1,149.99. The Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at $1,199.99. Last year’s Microsoft launch prices were $799 and $899. As a result, the small Surfaces now sit closer to the June X2 machines than to last year’s entry Copilot+ PCs. Buyers who need more cores, USB4, or OLED still have the larger Pro and Laptop, plus the Surface Laptop Ultra for heavy local AI work.
Finally, these remain Windows on Arm Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft’s tests look better than last year’s small Surfaces. Independent reviews will still decide whether the extra money is worth it, especially once you add a Pro keyboard and Slim Pen.
