Google is rolling out a Google Maps Lake America label for users in the United States. The company says the Geographic Names Information System formally changed the name of Lake Ontario. So Maps is following that US database.
People using Maps in the United States will see “Lake America.” People in Canada will still see “Lake Ontario.” People outside both countries will see both names. “These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now,” Google wrote.
How the Google Maps Lake America label appears
Then Google published a three-panel graphic of the same shoreline. The United States panel labels the water Lake America. Canada keeps Lake Ontario. Elsewhere, Maps shows Lake Ontario with Lake America in parentheses.
The graphic uses the same Lyndonville, Kendall, and Hilton shoreline in every frame. So the change is the name, not the map. Meanwhile, the post does not say the label is finished everywhere. Google says the updates are starting to roll out now.
Why Maps changed the name
Google says it updates Maps when official government sources change a name. For the United States, that source is GNIS. Besides the Maps post, Google linked a GNIS record for the lake. It also linked the USGS GNIS tool.
President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14422 on August 27, 2026. The order directs the Interior secretary to rename the lake Lake America in federal use and to update GNIS. Still, that order does not bind Canada.
However, Google is not writing a political argument. It is applying a split-label rule for water that different countries name differently. As a result, a US phone and a Canadian phone can show different names on the same water. Also, the Maps post does not mention Apple Maps or Bing.
This is a Maps database change, not a new navigation feature. It sits alongside other Google software notes, including Android 17 Encrypted Client Hello and Pixel 11 ads. A user in the United States who searches the lake should see the new water label. A user in Canada should still see Ontario.
