Apple Wallet IDs are not live in four extra states yet. North Carolina’s DMV did confirm a mobile ID program, and it says Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet should follow in early 2027.

First comes a state app. NCDMV says launch IDs will live only in the official NC Wallet. Residents with a valid North Carolina driver license or state ID can get one at no extra cost. WRAL reports the DMV aims to start that program in December 2026 for holiday travel.

Apple’s own ID in Wallet page still lists 14 states plus Puerto Rico. North Carolina is not on that list. Neither are Oklahoma, Utah, or Virginia.

What North Carolina says it will allow

NCDMV calls a mobile ID a secure digital credential, not a photo of a plastic card. The agency says a user keeps the phone in hand. An officer or TSA checkpoint can check it with a reader, or the person can tap the phone to a device.

At launch, North Carolina mobile IDs will work at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 U.S. airports, including Charlotte Douglas and Raleigh-Durham. They will also work at NCDMV offices. Then the agency expects more businesses and agencies to join through 2027.

A mobile ID is legally equivalent to a physical card in North Carolina. However, NCDMV still tells people to carry the plastic card while retailers catch up. If an officer has no compatible reader during a stop, the agency says they may ask the driver to read the license details aloud.

What still is not confirmed for Apple Wallet IDs

MacRumors says it saw Apple code pointing to Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia. The site published no launch dates for those three. Apple has not posted a matching newsroom note.

That code hunt is not the same as a live Wallet picker. Still, Apple says IDs work at select TSA checkpoints, Apple Stores, venues, and apps after Face ID or Touch ID. The company also says it cannot see when or where someone presents an ID.

Meanwhile, other wallet products keep moving. Google recently opened a Kids Money path in Google Wallet for U.S. parents. Apple, for its part, has been pushing other iPhone security tools, including threat notifications for spyware targets.

So the four-state headline is a mix. North Carolina published a plan. Meanwhile, three other states showed up in code. Apple Wallet IDs in those places remain a later step, not a tap that works today.
