ROG Xreal R1 AR gaming glasses are now available to pre-order. ASUS is not pricing them like a casual accessory. The headset costs $849, so it needs to feel like a serious portable display.
The R1 is a collaboration between ASUS ROG and Xreal. It pairs wearable display hardware with a control dock. That dock is meant to help the glasses work with more devices, instead of locking them to one gaming setup.
A premium screen you wear
ASUS says the glasses support a 240Hz refresh rate. They also include Bose-tuned audio and USB-C input. That pitch makes sense for handheld PCs, gaming laptops and compact console setups.
The appeal is easy to understand. A player can carry a smaller device and still get a larger private screen. That sounds useful for travel, shared rooms or late-night gaming without taking over a TV.
The price is the hard part. At $849, the ROG Xreal R1 has to beat cheaper display glasses on comfort, clarity and ease of use. It also has to avoid the fatigue that can make wearable screens feel temporary.
Who should care first
This looks most interesting for players who already carry powerful hardware. A ROG Ally, gaming laptop or compact console setup could benefit from a screen that fits in a bag.
Everyone else may want to wait for hands-on impressions. Specs can sell the idea, but fit and image quality will decide whether the glasses are worth it.
The timing also makes sense. Handheld gaming PCs keep getting stronger, but their screens remain small. Glasses like this try to solve that problem without asking players to pack a second display.
Pre-orders are open now through ASUS. The ROG Xreal R1 joins a growing wave of wearable displays chasing gamers who want bigger screens without carrying a monitor.
