OpenAI is putting Codex inside the ChatGPT mobile app. The new OpenAI Codex mobile preview is rolling out on iOS and Android across supported regions and plans, including Free and Go.

The official Shorts video makes the pitch clear. Codex is no longer something you have to babysit from one desk. You can check work, steer tasks and respond to approvals from your phone.

OpenAI’s official Codex mobile Short shows the phone workflow in action.

Codex becomes easier to steer away from the desk

OpenAI says users can view active threads, review outputs, approve commands, change models and start new work from mobile. Screenshots, terminal output, diffs, test results and approvals can flow back to the app in real time.

The feature makes the most sense for long-running coding agents. If Codex hits a decision point while you are away, the mobile app can let you answer quickly. That keeps work moving without pulling you fully back to a laptop.

It also builds on the direction we saw when OpenAI brought Codex into Chrome. Codex is becoming less of a single-window coding tool. It is turning into an agent workspace that follows your day.

Security and platform limits still matter

OpenAI says files, credentials, permissions and local setup stay on the machine where Codex is running. A secure relay layer keeps trusted machines reachable across devices without exposing them directly to the public internet.

There are enterprise pieces too. Remote SSH is now generally available, hooks are available on all plans, and Business or Enterprise users can use programmatic access tokens. OpenAI also says HIPAA-compliant local use is supported for eligible ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces.

The Windows caveat is important. OpenAI says support for connecting a phone to the Codex app on Windows is coming soon. For now, OpenAI Codex mobile is strongest for people already using supported Codex environments and updated ChatGPT mobile apps.
