Venmo redesign changes are making the payment app a little less public by default, which is overdue for an app built around money.

The Verge reports that new-user onboarding in the redesign defaults payment posts to friends-only instead of public. Users can still choose public or private settings.

Privacy Finally Moves Up Front

PayPal has also been positioning Venmo as more than a peer-to-peer payment app. The new design adds a revamped feed, reactions and shortcuts like Pay Again, Say Thanks and Give a Shoutout.

That privacy shift is the important part. Venmo’s social feed has always been oddly public for a money app. A more discreet default makes sense as payment apps become broader financial hubs. It pairs with the wider app-trust conversation we recently covered around iOS app and messaging changes.

Still Check Your Settings

The rollout starts with feed changes over the coming weeks, with broader redesign work expected later. Existing users should still check their own privacy settings instead of assuming the app changed everything for them.

Venmo’s old public feed became part of its identity, but it also made the app feel dated. Money movement is personal. Most users do not need every split bill to become a social post. A quieter default is overdue.

The redesign also shows how payment apps are trying to become daily finance hubs. Venmo wants users to return for more than reimbursements. Privacy is a good place to start. If the app feels cleaner, people may trust it with more of their money habits.

That change should also reduce awkward moments. Public Venmo activity has exposed habits, relationships and routines for years. A more discreet default better matches how people actually think about money. It makes the app feel more grown up.

That default alone should make Venmo feel less exposed.
