The South African Government has announced the death of Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa. He was civil rights icon, and anti-apartheid revolutionary. He passed away at the age of 95 on Thursday, after almost a month of being in intensive care in Pretoria, South Africa. He was being treated for a recurring lung infection, an illness that traces back to his years in prison. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison during the rule of the white racist government and apartheid, he was freed in 1990, and became South Africa’s first black president in 1994.
