The90 Gem Necklace Tracks UV Exposure in Real Time

The90 Gem measures real-time UVA and UVB exposure from a pendant necklace, then turns that data into sunscreen and sun-habit guidance.

The90 Gem is a new smart necklace built around one sharp idea: your phone’s UV index does not know what your skin is actually getting. The pendant pairs with The90’s app to track real-time UVA and UVB exposure. Then it turns that data into guidance for sunscreen timing, shade and cover-up decisions.

The product comes from The90, a preventative skin-health startup led by Stacy Salvi. In the company’s launch announcement, The90 describes Salvi as a Fitbit veteran who helped lead the business relationship behind Google’s $2.1 billion Fitbit acquisition. That history gives the launch a wearable-tech hook. However, the device looks more like jewelry than a fitness band.

What the necklace tracks

According to The90’s product page, The Gem measures both UVA and UVB rays. UVA is associated with long-term skin aging, while UVB is tied more closely to sunburn. The company says the sensor can capture exposure that adds up through windows, cars, errands and outdoor time.

The app builds a skin profile from habits such as sunscreen use and protective clothing. After that, it shows burn risk, cumulative exposure and reapplication prompts. In plain English, the pitch is less “count your steps” and more “stop guessing when your SPF routine needs attention.”

A wellness wearable with a jewelry pitch

The design choice matters. The Gem is a round pendant that can blend into an existing necklace stack. That makes it more subtle than another wrist device. The90 lists the gold version at $299, with a $199 early-access offer, and says orders placed now will ship in June.

The wearable also arrives while Google is opening more pieces of the Fitbit ecosystem. Tech My Money recently covered Google opening Fitbit Air Band specs for accessory makers. The90 feels like a different branch of the same idea: health sensors that people will actually keep wearing.

The useful caveat

The90 is making a skincare and prevention pitch. It is not replacing common-sense sun protection. A necklace can help show exposure patterns, but users still need sunscreen, shade and medical advice when appropriate. Still, if the app feels accurate and the jewelry stays comfortable, The90 Gem could make UV exposure feel less abstract than a weather app number.
