Volvo EX60 first drive coverage makes the new electric SUV sound like one of Volvo’s most important EVs yet. The EX60 is the all-electric sibling to the XC60, which has long been a core model for the brand.
Engadget’s Tim Stevens spent time with the 2027 Volvo EX60 and came away impressed by its smoothness, interior feel and overall value around the $60,000 mark.
The EX60 also brings Volvo’s newer EV architecture to a more mainstream segment. That matters because midsize crossovers are where a lot of family buyers actually shop.

What stands out
The Volvo EX60 first drive highlights a familiar Scandinavian design approach. The SUV looks related to the larger EX90, but it is sized for a more common daily-driver role.
Under the skin, the EX60 is more interesting. Engadget notes Volvo’s use of megacasting and a new onboard processing system called HuginCore. That system combines NVIDIA and Qualcomm hardware and should support over-the-air improvements over time.
The cabin also sounds like a correction from some recent Volvo missteps. Physical controls return on the steering wheel, and the layout appears cleaner without going fully touch-only.
The price point matters because EV buyers now have more choices. A smooth $60,000 Volvo can work if the range, software and charging experience feel mature. If any of those miss, shoppers will have no shortage of alternatives.

The extra first-drive images help show the things that matter beyond range and price: the cabin layout, the road presence and how closely the EX60 follows Volvo’s newer EV design language.
The Tech My Money take
The Volvo EX60 first drive makes the SUV sound polished, but not unbeatable. The big question is whether it can stand out against incoming rivals from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and others.
Volvo has a strong brand lane: safety, calm design and premium comfort without shouting. If the EX60 delivers that with good range and pricing, it could be the Volvo EV that normal luxury crossover buyers finally take seriously.
