The Neo Geo AES+ is slipping by ten months. Plaion Replai builds the SNK-licensed console remake. It confirmed in a press release that the worldwide launch now moves to Thursday, September 16, 2027. The original date was November 12, 2026. The company blames the same AI-driven memory chip shortage that has already pushed up prices across the industry.
“Unprecedented worldwide demand for memory chips, driven by investment in AI infrastructure, has created well documented industry-wide supply constraints,” the company wrote. Rather than launch in November with “severely constrained worldwide availability,” it chose to wait. Meanwhile, Plaion Replai says demand from fans, collectors and retailers far exceeded its forecasts. So it is expanding manufacturing at the same time.
What changes for pre-order customers
Nothing, in practice. Existing pre-orders keep their place in the production queue, and no action is required. Prices also stay where they were. In addition, every console from the launch production run ships with a Founding Supporter Bonus. Standard and Anniversary Edition buyers get a free NEOGEO AES+ Gamepad. Ultimate Edition buyers get a 30 percent voucher for any AES+ game on Plaion Replai’s store. However, later production runs will not include the bonus.
Plaion’s April announcement priced the Standard Edition at £179.99 (€199.99) and the Anniversary Edition at £269.99 (€299.99). Cartridges came in at £69.99 (€79.99). For U.S. buyers, Engadget reports $250 for the black console, $350 for the white Anniversary bundle and $90 per game. Plaion Replai’s own store lists the Ultimate Edition, which includes all ten launch games, at €899.99.
Why a retro console needs memory chips
The AES+ is not a tiny emulation box. Plaion built it around ASIC hardware, so it runs original NEOGEO AES cartridges and outputs 1080p over HDMI. Consequently, it still needs memory, and console makers now compete with AI data centers for every chip. Valve felt it when the Steam Deck price increase pushed OLED models to $949. Likewise, Sony sold just 1.5 million PS5s in a quarter for the same reason.
Ben Jones, Plaion Replai’s commercial director, put it bluntly. “In the end, we concluded that launching with severely constrained availability would not be fair to our community,” he said. Still, a ten-month slip is a long time to hold a deposit, and the company acknowledged as much with an apology in the release.
Ten launch games and a longer roadmap
The launch line-up is unchanged: Metal Slug, The King of Fighters 2002, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Big Tournament Golf, Shock Troopers, Samurai Shodown V Special, Pulstar, Twinkle Star Sprites, Magician Lord and Over Top. Plaion Replai says it is now in talks with other licensors to add more games. Additionally, Tokyo Game Show 2026 will host the first public hands-on sessions. The Ultimate Edition stays a limited production run.
As Engadget notes, this is not Plaion Replai’s first retro console. It also handled the Commodore 64 remake and the Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition. Even so, the retro market keeps moving while the AES+ waits. For example, Anbernic’s RG 55G1 went on sale last week. Therefore, Plaion Replai is betting that authenticity, not speed, keeps its pre-order queue intact until September 2027.
