The SanDisk 8TB PS5 SSD makes the console look cheap by comparison. SanDisk lists the officially licensed Optimus GX PRO 850P at $3,699.99 for the 8TB model.

That price turns a normal storage upgrade into a luxury purchase. It is several times the cost of a PlayStation 5 Pro. Also, it arrives at a moment when gamers are already watching hardware prices climb.

SanDisk 8TB PS5 SSD specs are serious

SanDisk says the 8TB drive uses the M.2 2280 form factor. It includes a heatsink built for the PS5 and PS5 Pro slot. It also reaches up to 7,200MB/s sequential read speeds and 6,600MB/s sequential writes.

The company lists a five-year limited warranty and 4,800TBW endurance for the largest capacity. Meanwhile, SanDisk says the 8TB model can store up to 200 games. That estimate uses a 36GB average per game, so real libraries will vary.

Still, the pitch is easy to understand. This is a drop-in, console-safe storage monster for players who never want to juggle installs. However, the price changes the conversation from convenience to excess.

The value question is harder than the install

A 2TB PS5 Pro already gives players more internal storage than the original PS5. Cheaper M.2 drives also remain the better route for most people who only need room for a few more games. Therefore, this 8TB model feels aimed at the player who wants maximum space and official branding.

The timing matters too. Gaming hardware prices have been moving in the wrong direction for players. Tech My Money recently covered Sony’s broader accessory push around the PlayStation FlexStrike and gaming monitor. Valve’s Steam Deck OLED price increase showed the same pressure hitting handheld PC gaming.

SanDisk’s new PS5 drive feels like the storage version of that trend. The performance is real. The capacity is huge. Yet the price makes it a showcase product more than an easy recommendation.

For most PS5 owners, the smarter move is to compare smaller capacity drives and watch for sales. Finally, delete games you are not actively playing before a storage upgrade starts costing more than a full console setup.
