Meta has settled a Meta school district lawsuit in Kentucky just weeks before trial. The Kentucky case was one of the first of more than 1,200 similar suits. They were filed against social media companies across the US. It was also the only one with an imminent trial date. Snap, YouTube, and TikTok had already settled the same Kentucky case the week prior.

The lawsuit alleged that Meta and other platforms caused harm to student mental health and strained school resources. School districts have argued that the platforms designed their products to be addictive to minors. Additionally, the Kentucky case drew particular attention. It was on track to become the first such case to reach a jury. Both sides watched it closely for that reason.

What Meta Said About the Settlement

Meta confirmed the settlement in a brief statement. The company said it resolved the case amicably and pointed to ongoing work on features like Teen Accounts. Teen Accounts add parental controls and content restrictions for users under 18. However, Meta did not disclose the financial terms of the settlement.

Meta’s Broader Legal Exposure

The Kentucky settlement does not resolve Meta’s broader legal exposure. Indeed, more than 1,200 school districts still have pending cases. Active litigation also continues in New York and Seattle. Furthermore, a Los Angeles jury recently ruled against both Meta and YouTube in a separate social media addiction trial. A New Mexico court subsequently ordered Meta to pay $375 million in a child safety case. Meta is appealing that verdict.

The pattern of pre-trial settlements suggests that platforms are weighing trial costs against adverse jury verdicts. Still, with hundreds of cases remaining open, the wave of school district litigation against social media is far from over. Currently, no comprehensive settlement covering all pending Meta school district lawsuit cases has been announced.
