Motorola’s Project Ara Is the Company’s Hardware Project Plan,To Create Customizable Smartphones

If you think the Moto Maker was the only trick Motorola had up its sleeves, then your mind would be blown with the company’s new project “Ara.” Not too long ago the internet was buzzing with the Phonebloks online campaign that teased the ability to change old handset components. Today Motorola announced project Ara on the company blog, and further stated that “Project Ara is developing a free, open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones.

We want to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines.” The group will be working the Phonebloks creator Dave Hakkens on an “endoskeleton (endo) and modules.” The recent post also adds that the company has been working on Project Ara for over a year before they met Dave Hakkens, and they’ve “done deep technical work.” Motorola is making the development process open, engaging, and will be sending out invitation to developers to start creating modules for the Ara platform.
