JBL Cove Wi-Fi Speakers Take Aim at Sonos

JBL Cove Wi-Fi speakers are JBL’s clearest push yet into the whole-home-audio space, and after seeing the range at the company’s NYC preview, the big takeaway is not simply that JBL built three new speakers. It built a connected system that feels genuinely approachable. According to JBL’s official Cove announcement, the M1, P1 and X1 arrive September 13, starting at $229.95. That gives shoppers looking at Sonos a lower-cost entry point without forcing them into a one-speaker dead end.

JBL is aiming for the same core promise as established multi-room systems: put music where you want it, add speakers over time, and avoid treating every room as a separate setup project. However, Cove makes connectivity the real headline. The line supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect and Roon Ready, while the JBL One app handles setup and room grouping.

Three speakers, one system

The $229.95 Cove M1 is the compact entry speaker. It has three tweeters and one woofer, plus room calibration, Constant Sound Field tuning and AI Sound Boost. Meanwhile, the $449.95 Cove X1 is the big-room option. JBL gives it four tweeters, two woofers and Dolby Atmos Music support. Both speakers can work alone, as a stereo pair or as part of a larger Cove setup.

That flexibility matters. You can begin with one M1 and add another for stereo, then place an X1 where you want the most ambitious sound. In other words, Cove offers a practical ladder into a more complete home system. It is also compatible with JBL Bar MK2 soundbars for multi-room music, while the M1 and P1 can serve as rear channels in a Dolby Atmos home-theater setup.

The P1 is the differentiator

The Cove P1 is the model that gives the range a personality of its own. At $399.95, it is a portable Wi-Fi speaker with an integrated handle, charging dock, IP56 dust and water resistance, and up to 14 hours of claimed playtime. It still belongs to the same whole-home setup, but you can take it to the patio or pool instead of leaving it permanently plugged into a room.

JBL also includes Dolby Atmos Music on the P1. More importantly, it does not ask you to choose between a travel-friendly speaker and a multi-room one. That hybrid role is where Cove feels different from many traditional home-speaker ecosystems.

Easy setup is only useful if everyday control stays easy

JBL says the One app gets Cove online in three steps. The more compelling feature is Music Follows Me. Long-press the Moment button on another Cove speaker and the current music moves there, with no phone or app required. You can also build groups in the app, then start listening in one room without breaking playback everywhere else.

That is the kind of friction JBL needs to remove if it wants to be a real Sonos competitor. The company is not trying to win with a single specification. It is trying to make a house full of speakers feel simple. Sonos has recently kept pushing its software and smart-home experience, including its Live Activities update for iPhone users. JBL’s response is a broader streaming menu, a portable system member and a less expensive first purchase.

A serious value play, with real competition ahead

We would still want longer-term listening time before calling Cove a sound-quality winner against Sonos. Room acoustics, app reliability and how well Music Follows Me works in a busy home will matter. Still, the premise is strong: $229.95 gets you into JBL’s system, and the lineup scales from a compact room speaker to the P1’s on-the-go design and X1’s Atmos-focused setup. That is a much more convincing strategy than releasing another isolated Bluetooth speaker.

JBL Cove launches in black and white on September 13 at JBL.com. For JBL, which also recently leaned into portable spectacle with the Pulse 6’s light-show-focused design, Cove is a more strategic move: a connected audio family built to follow listeners from room to room and out the door.
