BMW iX5 Brings 435 Miles of Range to the X5 Lineup

BMW's first electric X5 arrives with Gen6 batteries, 800V charging, and a big preliminary range claim.

BMW finally put a full EV inside its X5 family. The BMW iX5 60 xDrive launches with an estimated 435 miles of range, 570 horsepower, and a $79,800 starting price before the $1,450 destination charge.

That range claim is still preliminary. BMW says the figure comes from company testing that follows EPA procedures. Even with that caveat, the iX5 gives BMW a long-range electric luxury SUV without forcing buyers into a separate iX-only shape.

The electric X5 gets BMW’s Gen6 hardware

The iX5 60 xDrive uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive system. Its 800V architecture supports DC charging at up to 460 kW. BMW says a 10-to-80 percent charge takes 22 minutes under preliminary testing.

Drivers can also add about 170 miles of range in 10 minutes, according to BMW. The pack uses new 120-millimeter cylindrical cells and a cell-to-pack design. BMW lists 144 kWh of net usable energy, a standard NACS port, and bidirectional charging.

Performance should not feel shy. The electric X5 uses one motor on each axle for 570 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque. BMW estimates 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and a 130 mph limited top speed.

Gas, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen stay in the lineup

BMW is not making the X5 an EV-only nameplate. The fifth-generation SUV will offer combustion engines, a plug-in hybrid, the battery-electric iX5, and later the iX5 Hydrogen. Availability will vary by market.

The rollout starts in October with the X5 40 xDrive. Rear-drive X5 40, X5 50e plug-in hybrid, and iX5 60 xDrive models follow in the first quarter of 2027. A V8 M Performance version is due later in 2027.

Pricing starts at $69,800 for the X5 40 and $72,100 for the X5 40 xDrive. The X5 50e xDrive PHEV opens at $77,500. The fully electric iX5 60 xDrive starts at $79,800. Each price excludes BMW’s $1,450 destination and handling charge.

Neue Klasse tech moves into the big SUV

The cabin also moves closer to BMW’s Neue Klasse software direction. It gets BMW Panoramic iDrive with Operating System X, Panoramic Vision across the lower windshield, and a 17.9-inch central display. Buyers can add a passenger screen.

Design changes are easy to spot. BMW gives the new X5 a taller front end, a vertically aligned Iconic Glow kidney grille, double-X light icons, winglet door handles, and available automatic doors. The cabin adds a panoramic glass roof and an available Bowers & Wilkins Dolby Atmos system with up to 775 watts.

This launch also matters for BMW’s U.S. production plan. The iX5 will be the first all-electric BMW assembled at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina. It follows other BMW EV moves, including the BMW i3 50 xDrive order window.

The iX5 will also face more premium electric SUV pressure. Shoppers will compare its final range, charging curve, and software polish with rivals such as the Volvo EX60 and other luxury EVs.

BMW lays out the full launch details in its official X5 and iX5 press release. The open question is whether the final EPA number lands near BMW’s estimate. On paper, though, the electric X5 finally looks like the main event.
