Volkswagen ID. Era 5S is now open for China presales as a mid-size plug-in hybrid sedan from SAIC Volkswagen. A limited-time entry price of 115,900 yuan (about $17,175) undercuts list trim pricing that starts at 119,900 yuan (about $17,770). Moreover the formal market launch is scheduled for August 21 at the Chengdu Auto Show.

On paper that sticker makes America’s cheapest EV look expensive. Chevrolet lists the 2027 Bolt around $28,995 before destination. However the ID. Era 5S is a China-only PHEV, not a U.S. showroom twin of the Bolt. Therefore tariffs, safety rules, and SAIC-VW branding still keep this sedan off American lots.

Four trims cover Pure through Max. Without the limited-time cut, CarNewsChina lists Pure at 119,900 yuan (about $17,770), Neo at 129,900 yuan (about $19,250), Pro at 139,900 yuan (about $20,735), and Max at 149,900 yuan (about $22,215). Meanwhile CnEVPost reports limited-time prices from 115,900 yuan to 145,900 yuan, and a 1,000-yuan deposit that unlocks 5,000 yuan off the balance.

This sedan is the second car in the ID. Era new-energy line after the ID. Era 9X range-extended SUV. Likewise the car targets Chinese shoppers who want a Volkswagen badge with local assisted-driving tech, not an export-spec EV for U.S. dealers.

PHEV powertrain, range, and efficiency claims

SAIC Volkswagen pairs a dedicated 1.5-liter engine rated at 80 kW with a drive motor rated at 130 kW (174 hp). A 19.1 kWh LFP pack, with cells from Rept Battero Energy in press coverage, supports about 160 km of CLTC electric range (roughly 99 miles). In addition, company figures cite more than 2,000 km of combined range on a full charge and full tank.

CnEVPost cites fuel use of 2.82 liters per 100 km with a depleted battery under Chinese test rules. The pack can charge from 30% to 80% in about 15 minutes in those figures, and it supports 3.5 kW vehicle-to-load discharging. Still, CLTC numbers are marketing-cycle claims, not EPA labels American buyers can shop against.

Cabin, size, and urban NOA assist

Outside, the fastback body measures 4,836 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,505 mm tall on a 2,766 mm wheelbase. SAIC Volkswagen claims 15 aero features and a 0.247 drag coefficient. Wheel options run 17 to 19 inches across trims. Inside, a 15.6-inch center screen pairs with an 8.8-inch instrument cluster, column shifter, wireless phone charging, and phone links including Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and Carlink.

Front seats offer heating, ventilation, and 10-point massage. The passenger seat can recline into a lie-flat mode in launch coverage. Rear seats heat as well. Therefore the cabin pitch aims at long trips as much as city EV miles.

Assisted driving is the other headline. Volkswagen positions the ID. Era 5S as its first sedan with urban and highway Navigate on Autopilot. Drivers must still supervise at all times, because the stack remains Level 2 partial automation. The Xingyun Zhixing system also covers automatic parking, remote parking, reverse tracking, and cross-floor memory parking. Moreover AEB can work at speeds up to 140 km/h in company materials, with deep customization on Horizon Robotics algorithms according to CnEVPost.

Why the China price gap still matters

The value shock is real even after you correct for hybrid vs pure electric. A Volkswagen-branded PHEV near $17,175 shows how hard Chinese volume pricing has become. For context, we just covered the BYD Seal 06 China price war near $16,100 and the U.S.-bound 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport refresh. Those stories sit on opposite ends of the same brand map: China fights on yuan stickers, while North America still prices family SUVs far higher.

For now, the Volkswagen ID. Era 5S is a China product with August 21 launch timing, four trims, about 160 km of CLTC EV range, and urban NOA on a supervised L2 stack. American shoppers should treat the $17,175 number as a market signal, not a dealer invoice they can order this week.
