2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive Starts at $79,800 With an Estimated 435-Mile Range and 460 kW Charging

BMW's first all-electric X5 arrives in Q1 2027 with 570 horsepower, a 144 kWh Gen6 battery, and Neue Klasse cabin technology.

The 2027 BMW iX5 brings Neue Klasse 800-volt technology to BMW’s fifth-generation X5 lineup. Built at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, the electric iX5 60 xDrive starts at $79,800. Every 2027 X5 and iX5 model also carries a $1,450 destination and handling charge. U.S. deliveries for the electric SUV begin in the first quarter of 2027. Meanwhile, the 394-horsepower X5 40 xDrive mild hybrid opens the generation in October 2026 at $72,100. Early 2027 also brings the rear-wheel-drive X5 40 at $69,800 and the X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid at $77,500. V8 M Performance trims arrive later in 2027, and a series-production iX5 Hydrogen follows later on.

“With its imposing presence and flawless symbiosis of comfort and driving pleasure, the BMW X5 became a global bestseller. And now the latest generation also benefits from the technologies in the Neue Klasse and the widest possible range of drive systems.”

Gen6 144 kWh Battery and 460 kW Charging Demo

Under the floor, the 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive packs a sixth-generation battery built in Woodruff, South Carolina. That Woodruff plant runs its normal operations without using fossil fuels. Its cell-to-pack battery uses 46 mm by 120 mm cylindrical cells for 144 kWh of net usable energy. As a result, BMW’s electric X5 reaches up to 435 miles of preliminary BMW AG estimated EPA range. A rear 325-horsepower synchronous motor pairs with a front 245-horsepower asynchronous motor. At low loads, the front motor decouples completely for zero drag loss. Together, the two motors produce 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque. Consequently, the SUV sprints from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 4.4 seconds and tops out at 130 mph.

Standard charging gear includes a native NACS port, 15.4 kW AC charging, and a 400-volt switching matrix. In addition, the SUV supports bidirectional V2L, V2H, and V2V power transfer. On October 20, 2026, BMW Group, IONNA, and Alpitronic demonstrated high-power charging up to 460 kW in Southern California. At that 460 kW peak rate, charging from 10% to 80% takes 22 minutes. Moreover, a 10-minute charge adds an estimated 170 miles of range under preliminary EPA test procedures. However, BMW notes that the 460 kW session is a technology demonstration. Therefore, that peak charging hardware is not commercially available in the U.S. today.

Heart of Joy Control and Panoramic iDrive Cabin

BMW’s in-house Heart of Joy control unit processes driving and recuperation up to 10 times faster than prior systems. Alongside the automated driving computer, it delivers silent, jerk-free BMW Soft Stop braking. Meanwhile, BMW Symbiotic Drive blends driver steering or braking inputs without shutting off Level 2 assistance. An optional Highway Assistant enables hands-free driving on suitable highways at speeds up to 85 mph, with eye-activated lane changes. Outside, flush BMW Winglet door handles sit on the B- and C-pillars with standard Soft Close. Buyers who add the Luxury Package also get radar-guided automatic doors that close via the brake pedal.

Inside, BMW Operating System X replaces the traditional gauge cluster and rotary dial with BMW Panoramic iDrive. While German luxury rivals chase compact EV efficiency, BMW spans Panoramic Vision across the full lower windshield. Standard cabin features include a 3D Head-Up Display, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, and an Amazon Alexa+ voice assistant. Finally, an optional 14.6-inch full-HD passenger screen darkens automatically if the interior camera sees the driver looking over.
