Venmo on Google Play is now live. Google added the PayPal-owned wallet as a checkout option on Monday. In practice, shoppers can pay for apps, games and subscriptions with a Venmo balance. Linked bank accounts and connected credit or debit cards work too.
What Venmo on Google Play covers
The rollout matches Google’s own announcement, and Venmo’s parent company confirmed the same details. In fact, apps, games, in-app purchases and subscriptions all qualify. Venmo’s newsroom frames the move as a play for Gen Z and Millennial spenders. Those crowds treat games, subscriptions and creator tips as social space.
Alexis Sowa, Venmo’s general manager, summed up the pitch. “Google Play powers so many of the digital experiences that millions of people share every day,” she said. “This is another step in making Venmo part of more of the everyday moments where people spend and connect.”
How the Venmo option works
Linking takes place inside the Play Store itself. A shopper opens the payment methods screen, selects Venmo and connects an account. After that, Venmo appears as a choice at checkout, alongside cards, PayPal and Cash App.
Google’s post also notes the social side. Payments keep the familiar Venmo feed, so game purchases can carry the notes and reactions friends already use. That feed got a privacy refresh earlier this year, when Venmo’s redesign made payments more private by default.
The bigger picture for payments on Play
The timing is no accident. Google opened the Play Store to outside billing in the US, the UK and Europe after its Epic Games settlement. As a result, wallet partners are the friendly face of that change. Still, the new flexibility has edges. According to Engadget’s reporting, developers who run their own alternative billing may not accept Venmo. The wallet’s reach also extends beyond Play. Once linked, it can cover purchases across Google services, YouTube included.
Pete Albers, who leads business development and partnerships for Google Play, welcomed the wallet. “Venmo is fast, flexible, and trusted,” he said. The payments race gives him company. X Money began a limited US rollout last month, and Google Wallet just added tap-to-pay for teens. More wallets at checkout, in short, is the new normal.
