Android 17 is officially rolling out, and Pixel owners are first in line. Google says Android 17 is available for Pixel devices today, with other eligible Android phones and tablets following through 2026.

The update is not just a visual polish pass. Google is focusing on multitasking, creator tools, foldable gaming, performance and tighter security controls. Some of the more ambitious Gemini Intelligence features are still marked for select advanced devices later this summer.

Bubbles turns apps into floating windows

The headline productivity change is Bubbles. Long-pressing an app icon can turn that app into a compact floating window, letting you keep one task visible while working in another. On tablets and larger screens, those bubbles sit in a dedicated bar for faster switching.

That sounds small until you think about how people actually use big Android screens. Notes, maps, sports scores, tutorials and messages can stay nearby without forcing a full app switch. It is the kind of feature that could make foldables and tablets feel less like enlarged phones.

Creators get Screen Reactions

Android 17 also updates screen recording with Screen Reactions. The feature can record your phone screen and selfie camera at the same time, so creators can make reaction clips without jumping between recording apps or editing two video layers later.

Google is clearly chasing short-form workflows here. A built-in reaction tool makes sense for TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts and quick app walkthroughs. It also gives regular users an easier way to explain what is happening on their screen.

Foldables get a gaming mode

Foldable gaming mode is another practical upgrade. Google says Android 17 can use a 50/50 layout, with the game view on one half of the display and a dynamic gamepad on the other. External controller users also get native controller remapping.

The foldable gaming feature will become available in the coming months. Google also says it reduced frame drops and stutters by making memory cleanup more efficient for high-definition gaming.

Security gets more granular

Android 17 adds several safety and privacy controls. Apps can get temporary access to precise location, and users can share selected contacts instead of handing over the whole address book. The update also builds on Google’s anti-scam work; Tech My Money recently covered how Android fake call detection can spot spoofed contacts.

Find Hub gets an improved Mark as lost option that can lock a missing phone with biometrics. Google says this can protect the device even if a thief knows the passcode. Live Threat Detection and Advanced Protection are also getting stronger defenses against suspicious apps and scams.

What Pixel owners should know

Pixel users can check for Android 17 from Settings, while non-Pixel users will need to wait for their device maker and carrier. Google also points readers to android.com/17 for the full feature list.

The short version: Android 17 looks like a practical update. It gives big screens better multitasking, makes reaction videos easier, adds a real foldable gaming layout and tightens the security controls people actually touch.
