Google is rolling out a Google Wallet kids money balance that U.S. parents can fund for children and teens under 18, according to a Google Pay product post. The company says minors can then tap to pay with Google Pay on NFC-enabled Android phones or Wear OS devices. Kids do not need their own bank account for that supervised balance.

Meanwhile, parental oversight runs through Family Link. Google says parents keep control of the balance and activity from the parent side of the family group. That framing matters for a cashless back-to-school season. Still, the feature is a supervised payment pot, not a full kid bank product.

What parents can control

Google lists several parent tools around the new balance. Parents can transfer money from their own account into the child balance. They can set spending limits and track transactions in real time. They can also lock or unlock the balance when needed. Soon, Google plans automated regular payments, though that scheduler is not live yet.

Additionally, parents can review activity through transaction lists or Family Link push notifications when those alerts are enabled. Google Help materials say a supervised Google Account managed with Family Link is part of the setup path. Only the family manager or someone with parent permissions can manage the child’s Google Wallet balance.

How kids are supposed to pay

In stores that accept Google Pay, the supervised balance is meant to work like other tap-to-pay funds. That path covers supported Android phones and Wear OS hardware. Kids do not need a separate bank account for the flow Google describes. The company positions the tool as a way to teach spending habits while keeping adult controls close by.

However, the release stays U.S.-focused for the parent-funded balance itself. Earlier Wallet family work already let some regions add parent-approved cards and passes under supervision. This update is the direct parent-to-child funding path for a dedicated kids balance.

How it compares and why it matters

The feature puts Google closer to family money tools such as Apple Cash Family. Those tools already let parents fund and supervise kids’ tap-to-pay balances. Google is competing on convenience inside Android and Wear OS, plus Family Link’s existing supervision stack.

Still, families should treat this as product news, not a how-to service desk. Bank rules and scam hygiene still apply. Google also notes that parents can freeze access if a device is lost or spending needs a hard stop.

Readers following Wallet on Android may already know the product’s broader digital-ID push, including TSA PreCheck Touchless ID expansion across major airlines. Parent-control stories in other apps also keep expanding; OpenAI, for example, recently widened parent alerts around teen ChatGPT use.

Availability notes

Finally, Google is launching the U.S. parent-funded kids balance now, with scheduled recurring transfers promised next. Families who want setup detail should use Google’s official Wallet and Family Link documentation rather than third-party walkthroughs. For device support questions, Google’s product and support pages remain the primary reference.
