The Super Mario Galaxy Movie heads to Peacock on July 30. That gives subscribers a chance to stream the billion-dollar animated sequel at home. NBCUniversal confirmed the streaming release follows the film’s digital download debut in May and its Blu-ray release in June.

The timing suits a summer crowd-pleaser. Families settling into mid-summer routines now have a new streaming option at home. The film also arrives having made over $1 billion at the global box office — proof the Nintendo-Illumination partnership has serious staying power.

What to Expect

Illumination’s sequel expands the Nintendo cinematic universe with appearances from Star Fox protagonist Fox McCloud, voiced by Glen Powell, and Yoshi. The film is also packed with Easter eggs for longtime Nintendo fans. Still, the plot itself leans heavily on spectacle over storytelling, much like its predecessor.

The first Mario movie, released in 2023, was similarly criticized for being loud and thin on narrative. Still, it grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide. Universal and Nintendo clearly have a formula that works commercially, even if critics remain divided. The sequel follows the same recipe, leaning into visual set pieces and character cameos rather than deep storytelling.

The Bigger Nintendo Picture

Nintendo’s film slate is accelerating. The next project is a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, directed by Wes Ball. Ball previously helmed the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and the new film hits theaters on April 30, 2027. Nintendo is positioning itself as a major Hollywood player, not just a game company.

The Mario franchise itself has a rich history on screen and off. Nintendo’s mascot has appeared in everything from theme parks to a sealed cartridge that sold for $3 million. Peacock, meanwhile, has been investing heavily in its content library, adding vertical video features to compete with mobile-first platforms.
