The Dog Stars trailer just gave us our best look yet at Ridley Scott’s next film. 20th Century Studios released a new trailer on June 8, and it leans hard into the tension of a world where almost everyone is gone.

Jacob Elordi stars as Hig, a young pilot scraping out a life in a brutal post-apocalyptic America. Josh Brolin plays Bangley, the military survivalist who guards their isolated homestead. Then a mysterious radio transmission crackles in. Hig flies toward it in search of hope.

The footage gets darker this time. We catch glimpses of feral humans attacking through green night vision. Meanwhile, Brolin’s character lays out the stakes in four words: “kill or be killed.”

Still, The Dog Stars trailer promises more than survival horror. The film adapts Peter Heller’s beloved 2012 novel about loss, loyalty and a dog named Jasper. The studio pitches it as a thriller where “survival is instinct, but humanity is a choice.” Additionally, Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Benedict Wong and Guy Pearce round out a stacked cast.

Ridley Scott returns to sci-fi

This marks Scott’s first science fiction feature since Alien: Covenant in 2017. At 88, the director keeps moving between genres at a pace most filmmakers half his age cannot match. Mark L. Smith, the writer behind The Revenant and Twisters, handled the screenplay. So the survival pedigree runs deep on both sides of the camera.

The Dog Stars lands in theaters on August 28. Meanwhile, the summer movie calendar keeps filling up. Tech My Money recently covered Amazon Prime’s early screening push for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Now late August has a serious sci-fi anchor to build around as well. Keep an eye out for tickets closer to release.
