WhatsApp Usernames Will Let You Chat Without Sharing Numbers

WhatsApp usernames are finally moving from long-running rumor to an official rollout path. In a new WhatsApp Blog post, the company says reservations start this week. The actual feature launches later this year.

The pitch is simple: you should be able to start a chat without handing over your phone number. WhatsApp uses examples like a classmate, a neighbor, or a temporary group where sharing digits may feel too personal. However, this is not a public handle system built around search and discovery.

Specifically, WhatsApp says there will be no username directory and no suggestions that help strangers browse for people. Someone will need to know your exact username before they can contact you for the first time. That makes the feature closer to a private contact alias than a public social profile.

Usernames Start With Reservations

WhatsApp is opening reservations early because the service has more than three billion users. Name overlap is inevitable. Therefore, the company is giving people time to pick a name before usernames become a normal contact option.

The setting is expected to live under Settings > Account > Username in the latest version of WhatsApp. Meanwhile, users with an Instagram or Facebook username may see an option to claim that same name. That makes sense inside Meta’s wider account universe.

There is also a safety layer here. WhatsApp says an optional username key can require someone to know a code before messaging you through a username. In practice, that could help keep the feature useful for new contacts without turning it into another spam funnel.

Phone Numbers Still Matter

The feature does not mean WhatsApp is removing phone numbers from accounts. Instead, when usernames launch, first-time contacts will not see your phone number if you enabled your username. Existing contacts and account setup may still involve the number behind the scenes.

That distinction matters because WhatsApp has spent years trying to balance convenience with privacy. Tech My Money recently covered how WhatsApp users remain a target for spyware campaigns. We have also seen messaging apps push harder on protected communication, including Discord expanding encrypted calls.

Still, usernames could remove one awkward step from everyday messaging. If WhatsApp handles rollout carefully, a username can become the thing you share at an event, in a group, or with a business. Your phone number can stay out of sight.
