Standalone Google Messenger App For Android Hits The Play Store

Google just added another Messenger app to the Play Store, it’s available to devices running Android version 4.1 (or higher). The app allows you to SMS and MMS your contacts, send group texts, pictures, videos and even audio messages. The release of the new “Messenger” makes me wonder if they still remember that their Hangouts app could the same thing.

We found out last month that the “Messenger” app  is just a Stock SMS/MMS Solution, not a Hangouts replacement or rebranding. The Messenger app comes pre-installed on Android Lollipop as the stock SMS/MMS app. Being a stock Android Lollipop app, the app is elegant and colorful, thanks to  its Material design. The Messenger app is ready for download now from the Play Store, or you can grab the APK from here.
