Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told BBC News that Xbox Project Helix is a family of devices, not one unnamed box. She was answering a disc-drive question at Gamescom 2026. She did not answer that question.

“We’re not sharing more on Helix. I know you had to ask it. But look, we’ve been hard at work on a great next generation and a great family of devices for Helix, and we’ll share more soon,” Sharma said. Then she repeated that Helix should play console games and PC games.

What Sharma would not lock down

BBC reporter Laura Cress asked whether Helix will be a discless console. Sharma laughed off the detail. Meanwhile, she pointed to affordability and efficiency. “All of the industry needs to start to innovate on affordability and efficiency. That is something that we have not had to do,” she said.

So Xbox has not named models, prices, or a consumer launch window. A family of devices could mean two home consoles. It could also mean handhelds or other screens. Sharma did not pick one of those paths. Series X and Series S clones are not confirmed.

What Xbox has already confirmed

In a March Xbox Wire post, VP of next generation Jason Ronald said Helix is a first-party console with a custom AMD SoC. It is co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. Xbox also plans to ship alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027.

However, that March note still described Helix as the next-generation first-party console, singular. Sharma’s Gamescom line is the first official turn toward a family. As a result, the hardware story is wider than one SKU, and still thin on specs.

Besides the living-room box, Xbox already sells the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 handheld. Component costs have also pushed current Xbox console prices higher in the EU and UK. Still, Sharma said Xbox wants more choice in how people play and buy a console. Xbox has not said which Helix devices will carry a disc drive.
