Google TV Freeplay now lets you pick more than 10,000 movies and shows on demand, with no extra subscription. In the official Google blog post, product manager Victoria Wen says you can now watch more than 10,000 free movies and shows whenever you want on Google TV Freeplay. The free, ad-supported library sits next to more than 300 live channels. The catch is the same one Freeplay has always had: it only runs on Google TV devices in the U.S.
On-demand titles you can start when you want
Until now, Freeplay was mostly a live FAST grid. You opened the app and watched whatever was already playing. Specifically, Google is adding video-on-demand for the first time. You can jump into a title whenever you want, then come back later, instead of waiting for a linear slot.
Google says the on-demand shelf includes studios such as A24 and Lionsgate. The blog names Lady Bird, Seventeen Again, and Hell’s Kitchen as examples. Also, Google says it will refresh the library through the year, so the 10,000-title count is a snapshot, not a locked catalog.
Live channels pass 300
Meanwhile, the live side is growing too. Freeplay now lists more than 300 free live channels across news, sports, reality, and true crime. New names include Bloomberg TV+, Yahoo! Sports Network, World of Love Island, and The Martha Stewart Channel.
You do not download a second app. Open Freeplay from the Google TV home screen and you get both the live guide and the new Free movies and shows tab. However, the ads stay. Google’s footnotes say the live channels and the on-demand titles are ad-supported, and you still need a Google Account plus a fast connection.
This sits next to the other living-room work Google has already shipped. We covered how Gemini can now fix picture and sound settings on Google TV. Also, TV makers keep stacking paid HDR formats on the same screens, as with HDR10+ Advanced on Prime Video. Freeplay is the opposite bet: skip another monthly bill and sit through ads.
As a result, U.S. Google TV owners can treat Freeplay as a built-in Tubi-style shelf instead of a live-only leftover. Availability can change, and the catalog is U.S.-only. If your set already runs Google TV, the Freeplay app is the place to look.
