A Minecraft Movie Squared is official, which means Warner Bros. is not just making another Minecraft movie. It is making the title part of the bit.
The sequel got its new name during Minecraft Live – May 2026, where the cast checked in from production in New Zealand. The movie is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027.
The reveal also confirmed Kirsten Dunst as Alex, the other default Minecraft character alongside Steve. Matt Berry is also part of the sequel, though the announcement did not spell out his role. That is probably smart. Minecraft fans will happily fill the silence with theories for the next year.
The Build Challenge Is the Better Hook
The more interesting move is the Minecraft Movie Build Challenge. Minecraft says players can build inside a limited 16x16x32 space using the same canvas and block restrictions. The winning build may appear in the movie or its end credits.
That is a very Minecraft way to market a sequel. Instead of only asking fans to watch a trailer, the campaign asks them to build something that could become part of the movie’s world. It turns the audience into a tiny production department.
The contest also gives Warner Bros. a cleaner fan hook than another round of teaser posters. If a player-made build lands in the credits, the sequel gets a small piece of the community’s own creativity baked into the rollout.
Warner Bros. Knows What It Has
The first A Minecraft Movie became much bigger than a normal video game adaptation. It rode a family audience, a huge game community, and viral theater moments into blockbuster territory. A fast sequel was not surprising.
The title is goofy, but it is also honest. A Minecraft Movie Squared sounds like a joke that knows exactly what franchise it belongs to. If the movie can make the Overworld feel bigger without just repeating the first film’s chaos, the name may age better than expected.
