Sonos today named its audio platform Sonos 27 and opened it to outside AI. The update is a software drop for Sonos S2 products. Some features stay limited to specific speakers and headphones. App navigation and Sonos 27mcp Early Access start rolling out Sept. 8.
AI control, including ChatGPT
Sonos 27mcp lets you hook an outside assistant or agent to the system. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is the named partner. Product lead Atty Eleti said people can ask ChatGPT to play music anywhere in the home from a phone or computer, without leaving the chat. The company also launched Sonos 27voice, its own assistant for music and mood curation. It did not give a calendar date for 27voice in the newsroom note.

Meanwhile, Sonos previewed Custom Agents. Those would let you create agents with their own model, persona, and voice. Chief Innovation Officer Nick Millington said the smartest home is not one do-everything assistant. Listeners pick, or create, the right agent for each job. However, that preview has no ship date in the announcement.
App, Fabric, and portable surrounds
Sonos 27app is getting new navigation that the company says the community shaped. It remains one control path beside 27voice and Sonos 27web. Sonos Fabric is the name for products sensing each other and changing roles. This fall it powers headphone linking for Ace Ultra, in Early Access, and portable surrounds.
Therefore, Move 2 and Sonos Play can become rear surrounds when you place them. Positioning uses high-frequency sound to sense location. Portable surrounds also start Sept. 8. Headphone linking waits until Ace Ultra ships. Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra are on pre-order now, with general availability Sept. 29. Those two products sit on a separate newsroom page. This software drop is the OS, not a full hardware recap.
Who gets it
As a result, treat Sonos 27 as an S2 update, not a new app you sideload. Some features stay product-specific. In addition, the company did not list S1 in the release. Finally, the Sept. 8 app and MCP wave is the first date that matters for current owners. It also sits next to other AI layers in Apple Music and Alexa Plus on Fire TV.
