ASUS Oxiis E250G1 Turns Almost Any Bike Into an E-Bike

ASUS builds motherboards, routers and gaming laptops, so a bicycle accessory looks like a strange turn. Nevertheless the company has one. The ASUS Oxiis E250G1 Intelligent Bike Booster clamps to a seatpost. Then it presses a powered roller against the rear tyre, turning an ordinary bike into an electric one. Afterwards you unclip it and carry it home in a backpack.

That last part is the pitch. Most conversion kits ask you to swap a wheel or thread a battery along the frame. This one weighs 3.7kg with its battery attached. Consequently the whole system lifts off in seconds and travels with you, instead of waiting at the bike rack.

A motor that leans on your tyre

Friction drive is an old idea, and it survives because it avoids the hard parts. Hub motors need a new wheel. Mid-drive systems need a compatible frame. A friction unit simply touches the tyre and spins it, which is why ASUS can claim the Oxiis fits almost anything you already own.

ASUS calls its control software Adaptive Boost Technology. According to the company, the unit senses a climb or a headwind and feeds in power without the rider changing modes. Meanwhile a wireless cadence sensor reads pedalling, so no cables run along the frame. A taillight sits on the back of the housing and brightens when it detects braking.

Because the roller works against rubber, friction drive has always carried caveats. Wet tyres reduce grip, and the contact patch wears over time. ASUS says an anti-slip mechanism keeps pressure steady across different tyres, though nobody outside the company has tested that claim over a winter yet.

What ASUS puts on the spec sheet

The published specifications are unusually specific for a product without a price. ASUS lists 250W of rated power with a 500W peak. Top assisted speed reaches 32km/h, although it drops to 25km/h where local rules demand it. The removable pack holds 158.4Wh at 36V, and the company quotes 50km of range in eco mode.

Charging runs through USB-C rather than a proprietary brick. ASUS quotes two hours for a full charge, but only with a 100W PD charger. Therefore the laptop adapter in your bag may not be enough. The housing measures 400 x 84 x 128mm and carries an IPX4 rating, which covers splashes rather than a downpour.

Reviewers who saw the kit at trade shows report compatibility from 16-inch wheels up to 700C, which would cover folding bikes and hardtails alike. ASUS does not publish that range on its own specification page, so treat it as reporting rather than a guarantee.

The company’s own clip shows the mounting process and the roller engaging the tyre, which explains the concept faster than a specification table does.

The unanswered question is price

ASUS has shown the Oxiis at the Taipei International Cycle Show and again at Eurobike. Yet it still lists no price and no firm release date. That silence matters, because conversion kits live or die on the gap between their cost and a cheap complete e-bike. Consequently a compelling 3.7kg design can still fail commercially if it lands near the price of a finished machine.

The timing is interesting all the same. Established names have been retreating rather than entering. Porsche shut down its performance e-bike division last year, after concluding the numbers did not work. Shared micromobility has struggled too, as Lime’s move toward an IPO made plain.

ASUS arrives from a different direction. The company already manufactures batteries, motors and companion apps for other product lines, and its ROG laptop business keeps that supply chain busy. Therefore the Oxiis reads less like a bet on cycling and more like an experiment in where existing components can go next.

Until ASUS names a figure, the Oxiis stays a promising specification sheet with a genuinely clever party trick. Riders who want electric assistance without giving up the bike they already like should watch for that announcement.
