YouTube Premium Adds an Auto-Speed Setting Built for Podcasts

New playback tools and AI podcast picks roll out on Android first, with iOS to follow.

YouTube Premium just picked up a clever new trick. The headline feature is Auto Speed. It adjusts playback speed on the fly, slowing down for dense or sluggish speech and pushing through filler. YouTube built it with podcasts in mind.

The reason is scale. YouTube says its podcasts now reach more than a billion people a month. In April 2026 alone, Premium subscribers streamed 800 million hours of them. So Auto Speed lands on Android first, with iOS coming soon.

Auto Speed is also smarter than the old manual control. You could already bump a clip to 1.5x or 2x by hand. This reads the audio instead and shifts speed moment to moment. Dense explanations slow down. Dead air speeds up. So the result feels less like a setting and more like a co-pilot.

What else YouTube Premium just added

On-the-go mode is the second addition. It strips the player down to simple, listener-friendly controls. So skipping forward or back gets easier while you move. Android Premium users have it now. iOS support arrives in the coming months.

The third feature leans on AI. Inside YouTube Music’s Ask Music tool, you can now request podcast recommendations. Ask by mood, by genre, or by a show you already enjoy. For now, that one stays limited to select countries.

Why YouTube is chasing podcast fans

The push makes sense. Podcasts have become one of YouTube’s fastest-growing formats. Listeners often leave a show playing in the background for hours at a time. So better controls and smarter speed keep them inside the app, instead of switching over to Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

You can read the full feature list on YouTube’s official blog. None of it is revolutionary. But it signals where YouTube sees growth — audio. As Google keeps stacking perks onto its premium subscriptions, YouTube Premium is quietly turning into a serious podcast app.
