Comcast launched Xfinity Shield on August 18. The new Xfinity Home platform wraps cybersecurity, family controls, and camera-free motion alerts into the Xfinity app. Comcast’s official announcement says the average Xfinity customer now connects 36 devices to WiFi.

How WiFi Motion works

WiFi Motion is an opt-in feature inside WiFi Shield. It uses the Xfinity Gateway to watch radio-frequency changes between the gateway and a connected device. Then the Xfinity app can ping you when unexpected movement shows up. Comcast says it does not record video, capture images, or identify people.

Xfinity’s WiFi Motion page says you can pair the gateway, Xfinity WiFi Extenders, and up to three extra stationary devices such as a speaker or thermostat. Place those devices so the sensing path crosses the rooms you care about. Also, keep those devices powered on. WiFi Motion is off by default.

What comes in WiFi Shield

WiFi Shield is included with Xfinity Internet on a compatible Advanced Gateway. It does not add a monthly fee. The suite also includes CyberSecure threat blocking, Family Settings for profiles and screen-time limits, and three notification modes. Home Watch stays quiet when you are around. Away Watch turns alerts on when you leave. Dark Watch covers overnight hours and can run on a schedule.

Compatible gateways include the Technicolor TXB7, XB8, XB9, XB10, MXB1, and XER10. Xfinity Support also says WiFi Motion is not available if you already subscribe to Xfinity Home Security. Therefore this is a software layer for internet customers, not a replacement for a full alarm package.

What Shield Select adds

Shield Select costs 15 US dollars a month in the Xfinity app. It keeps the WiFi Shield features and adds an indoor camera, a door or window sensor, cloud video storage, and 24/7 urgent response. AI cameras on that plan can flag people, pets, packages, and vehicles. Comcast says more Shield capabilities will arrive in 2027.

“Xfinity Shield represents our vision for the next era of the intelligent home,” said Jon Gieselman, Comcast’s chief growth officer for connectivity and platforms.
