Bungie’s online sci-fi shooter Destiny was one of the most highly anticipated games of 2014, ever since it was first revealed, with some people certain it would revolutionize gameplay. On September 9th, this shared-world shooter launched for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, and it received mixed reviews. While some fans have found it to be an addicting and wonderful experience, others name it one of the greatest gaming disappointments of the year. In particular, some people took issue with its lack of a solid story and tedious end-game content (which led to the infamous “loot caves” for grinding).

However, with new features and numerous updates, Destiny may be changing for the better. Even without such things, there are many players who enjoyed it just the way it was. Any game with such varied opinions might leave potential fans unsure if they should try it or not. If you’re one of the people who hasn’t yet decided whether or not you want to give Destiny a chance, there’s good news. Bungie (developer) has made a free trial available for all four consoles.

This new demo will let you create a character and try the various missions available in Destiny, including both story and co-op missions. If you then buy the full game, your progress will automatically be transferred over as long as you stay with in the console family: for example, progress from a PS3 trial could be transferred to the PS3 or PS4 full game, but not to either of the Xbox versions. Your console will also determine how much disk space you need to have (on the internal hard drive) in order to play the trial:

  • PS4 – 40 GB
  • Xbox One – 40 GB
  • PS3 – 6 GB
  • Xbox 360 – 6 GB

The official FAQ contains another piece of information PS3 and Xbox 360 players need to take into account: you only have a limited amount of time to try the trial. While the PS4 and Xbox One Destiny trials do not have an end date yet, the PS3 and Xbox 360 Destiny trials will only be available for players to download until January 6, 2015. The servers for the PS3/Xbox 360 trial will remain up until January 15, 2015.

Keep in mind that the PS4 and Xbox One version may receive an end date in the future, as well. For now, however, Bungie has provided a way for interested players to give Destiny a try. Are you interested?
